Karley Beckman is a Senior Lecturer and Head of Research at the School of Education, University of Wollongong, Australia. She holds a PhD in Education (2016) and has been in her current role since 2018, preceded by an Associate Research Fellowship (2016–2017). Her research focuses on digital technologies in education, addressing digital inequality, datafication of children, and AI's impact on learning environments. She leads initiatives like the STEM ConnectED network and contributes to global projects such as the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for the Digital Child. Karley has secured over $35 million in collaborative grants and $195K in competitive funding. She guest-edited a special issue on children’s digital rights and authored chapters in major education textbooks. Her work bridges research and practice, supporting teachers through professional learning programs and policy advocacy.
Research Interests: Digital literacy, children’s data privacy, AI in education, maker spaces in STEM, and self-regulated learning. She actively reviews for journals like Learning, Media and Technology and participates in organizations such as the European Association for Research on Learning and Instruction.
Advising & Grants: Currently supervising five PhD students exploring cyber safety, generative AI, and datafication. Recent grants include the AEGiS-funded project on GenAI and self-regulated learning (2023–2024). She advises the NSW Department of Education on digital literacy training and collaborates with over 100 K-12 teachers.
