Karl Morten serves as Professor, Director of Graduate Studies, and Principal Investigator at the University of Oxford's Nuffield Department of Women's & Reproductive Health. He leads an active research group focused on mitochondrial function in health and disease, with major projects targeting energy metabolism in cancer therapeutics and ME/CFS research.
His research interests center on mitochondrial biology and energy metabolism, with specific focus on Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS), Long Covid, Chronic Lyme Disease, and PANS PANDAS. His laboratory develops Raman Microscopy as a diagnostic tool and investigates plasma factors associated with fatigue conditions.
Recent publications reveal a strong trend toward interdisciplinary research connecting mitochondrial dysfunction with chronic illnesses. His work spans from fundamental mitochondrial biology to clinical applications, with particular emphasis on diagnostic signature identification for ME/CFS and related conditions. The research employs advanced techniques including Raman Microspectroscopy, plasma mass spectrometry, and microfluidic analysis.
Morten directs a substantial research operation with funding from ME Association UK, UK Spine Bridge, and MLSTF Oxford. His group includes multiple postdoctoral researchers, PhD students, and data specialists working on various aspects of mitochondrial research. He actively collaborates with researchers across Oxford, internationally, and with clinical partners to advance understanding of mitochondrial disorders.
He organizes the annual MitOX meeting at John Radcliffe Hospital, which brings together mitochondrial researchers from Oxford and the South East. His laboratory maintains active collaborations with Professor Joanna Poulton on mitochondrial disease, Dr Helen Townley on nanotherapeutic cancer delivery, and international researchers studying ME/CFS biomarkers.
