Karl Koop is Professor of History and Theology and Director of the Graduate School of Theology and Ministry at Canadian Mennonite University. Educated at University of Toronto (PhD), Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminaries (MDiv), and University of Manitoba (BA), his research focuses on Anabaptist-Mennonite studies with particular attention to confessional traditions and theological development.
Koop's scholarship centers on three interrelated domains: 1) Anabaptist Confessional Traditions examining doctrinal development; 2) Reformation-Era Theology with focus on Dutch Anabaptism; and 3) Contemporary Theological Applications of historical principles. His recent work commemorating Anabaptism's 500-year history explores memory and tradition reconstruction.
Analysis of Koop's publications reveals consistent engagement with primary sources from the Radical Reformation. His 2022-2025 publications demonstrate increasing focus on historical consciousness and theological legacy in contemporary contexts. Major works analyze patterns in Anabaptist confessions and their relevance to modern faith communities.
Koop serves as editor for Vision: A Journal for Church and Theology, having edited special issues on War and Peace (2025), Anabaptism's 500 Years (2024), and Discernment (2016). He holds adjunct appointments including Adjunct Professor in Peace and Conflict Studies at University of Manitoba (2023-2024).
