Karl Kügle

Karl Kügle is Professor of Musicology holding the Chair in the History of Music prior to 1800 at Utrecht University. Since 2011, he has served as Head of the Department of Media and Culture Studies within the Faculty of Humanities. His academic career spans multiple continents with significant appointments at the University of Hong Kong, University of Melbourne, and University of Chicago.

Research Interests:

Kügle specializes in European music of the later middle ages (c. 1300-1450), with particular expertise in medieval manuscripts such as the Ivrea, Biblioteca capitolare 115. His research encompasses the historiography of music(ology) from 1800 to present, examining how music history has been written and interpreted. He also investigates pre-modern music and court cultures, conducting comparative studies between European and East Asian court traditions. His interdisciplinary approach bridges musicology with cultural history, offering insights into how music functioned within historical court societies across different geographical regions.

Academic Leadership:

As Head of the Department of Media and Culture Studies since 2011, Kügle has led initiatives bridging traditional musicology with contemporary media studies.
