Karl Erik Birgersson

Karl Erik Birgersson is an Associate Professor with tenure at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, National University of Singapore (NUS), part of the College of Design and Engineering. His expertise lies in mathematical modeling and transport phenomena, with over 90 journal papers, one book, and five book chapters to his name (h-index 21 as of 2017). He is a consultant for Innosparks Pte Ltd., contributing to the Air+ Smart Mask, which earned prestigious awards including the President’s Design Award 2015 and Top 50 Engineering Feats Award 2016 in Singapore.

Education: Abitur and Studentexamen from the German-Swedish Bilingual School (1992), MS in Chemical Engineering (1998), Licentiate in Fluid Mechanics (2003), and PhD in Fluid Mechanics (2004), all from the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Stockholm. He has taught numerous modules, including Transport Phenomena in Energy Systems and Research Methodology and Ethics, earning 17 teaching awards at NUS since 2006.

Research focuses on fluid mechanics, heat/mass transfer, impedance, solar cells, fuel cells, batteries, hydrogels, and device systems like respirators and mine ventilation. His work bridges theoretical modeling and practical innovation, exemplified by the Air+ Smart Mask project.
