Karissa Haugeberg is an Associate Professor in Tulane University's Department of History, holding the Eva-Lou Joffrion Edwards Newcomb Professorship. Her research examines the relationship between gender, race, politics, and medicine in 20th-century America, with current projects on the U.S. anti-abortion movement and nursing history.
Education includes a Ph.D. in History from the University of Iowa (2011). Her publications include the award-winning book Women against Abortion: Inside the Largest Moral Reform Movement of the Twentieth Century (University of Illinois Press, 2017) and co-editorship of the 9th edition of Women's America: Refocusing the Past.
Research interests center on:
- Historical development of reproductive rights conflicts
- Nursing profession's engagement with civil rights
- Gender dimensions of social movements
- Legal history of bodily autonomy
Significant awards include NEH Fellowship, Newcomb Institute Scholar Award, and multiple article/book prizes. She teaches courses on U.S. women/gender history, history of medicine, and reproductive health history.
