Karim Schelkens is the Dean of the Tilburg School of Catholic Theology at Tilburg University and holds the Van den Tweel Chair in Contemporary Dutch Catholicism. As a Full Professor of Religious History, he also serves as Guest Professor at KU Leuven. His research focuses on contemporary religious history, with specialties in Vatican II, ecumenical movements, and religious biography. He has authored/co-authored over 20 books and numerous articles, including acclaimed biographies of Godfried Danneels and Johannes Willebrands. Schelkens has led international projects such as 'The History of the Desire for Christian Unity' and 'Vatican II Legacy and Mandate'. He has supervised 7 PhD students, including studies on colonialism, Vatican II dialogue agendas, and Franciscan histories. Awards include the C. de Clercq Award (2009) and Manitoba Day Award (2012).
Education includes a PhD from KU Leuven (2007), postdoctoral studies at Université Laval (Canada), and roles as Secretary General of the European Society for Catholic Theology (2012–2018). His teaching covers European Christian history, interreligious dialogue, and historical methodology. Current projects include a history of European Catholicism and collaborative research on Vatican II's global impact. He contributes to journals like ET-Studies and serves on editorial boards for Tijdschrift voor Religie, Recht en Beleid.
