Kari Ann Shirey

Kari Ann Shirey is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Her research investigates how respiratory pathogens like Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) and influenza manipulate macrophage differentiation to modulate host immunity.

Shirey’s work focuses on the role of alternatively activated macrophages (AAM/M2) in creating anti-inflammatory environments during RSV infection and resolving lung pathology. She also explores host-directed therapeutics, such as TLR4 antagonists and decoy peptides, to mitigate acute lung injury (ALI) in influenza and secondary bacterial infections.

Her publications reveal a consistent emphasis on TLR signaling, cytokine regulation, and macrophage polarization across respiratory diseases. These studies inform translational strategies for treating pathogen-induced inflammation.
