Kari Ann Shirey is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Her research investigates how respiratory pathogens like Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) and influenza manipulate macrophage differentiation to modulate host immunity.
Education:
- B.S., Pennsylvania State University
- Ph.D., Miami University
- Postdoctoral Study, University of Maryland School of Medicine
Shirey’s work focuses on the role of alternatively activated macrophages (AAM/M2) in creating anti-inflammatory environments during RSV infection and resolving lung pathology. She also explores host-directed therapeutics, such as TLR4 antagonists and decoy peptides, to mitigate acute lung injury (ALI) in influenza and secondary bacterial infections.
Her publications reveal a consistent emphasis on TLR signaling, cytokine regulation, and macrophage polarization across respiratory diseases. These studies inform translational strategies for treating pathogen-induced inflammation.
Scientific Awards:
- Theresa L. Gioannini Women in Science Award (2014)
- ImmunoTools Research Award (2014)
- American Association of Immunologists Trainee Abstract Award (2012)
- Travel awards and fellowships from 2002–2005
- ASM Women’s Career Development Grant (2008)
Shirey has secured grants and collaborations for developing host-oriented therapies, including the TLR4 antagonist Eritoran, which demonstrates efficacy even in late-stage influenza infections.
