Stefanie Vogel is a Distinguished University Professor at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, holding primary appointments in Microbiology and Immunology and secondary appointments in Medicine. As Senior Scientific Advisor of the UMGCCC Translational Laboratory Shared Resource, she has directed a T32 training program Signaling Pathways in Innate Immunity for over a decade.
Her research focuses on Toll-like receptor signaling and macrophage differentiation, with seminal contributions to innate immunity. Notable discoveries include the TLR4-SNP mouse model for infectious diseases and development of therapeutic TLR antagonists like Eritoran for influenza. She has mentored over 50 scientists, many now in leadership roles at NIH, FDA, and academic institutions.
Research Themes:
- TLR polymorphism effects on disease susceptibility
- Interferon-regulated immune responses
- Translational vaccine development
- Lipopolysaccharide signaling mechanisms
Scientific Recognition:
- NIAID MERIT Award (2000)
- Milstein Award (2014)
- Frederik Bang Award (2014)
- Women in Inflammation Award (2015)
- International Endotoxin Society President (2004-2006)
Her publications (over 450) span innate immunity, with recent work on interferon-driven neuroinflammation, Francisella tularensis vaccine development, and TLR4's role in respiratory infections. Current grants include R01 AI10451 for TLR4 antagonist therapeutics.
