Professor Karena Yan is Chair in Innovation and Strategic Management and Associate Dean at Durham University Business School. Her research focuses on innovation, strategic management, and technology-driven organizational change, particularly exploring how firms respond to institutional challenges, technological disruption, and sustainability transitions. She holds a PhD from Cardiff University and has been a Co-director of the Centre for Innovation and Technology Management and member of key committees at Durham.
Her work has been published in leading journals like Research Policy, Journal of Product Innovation Management, and Organization Studies. She leads projects such as the Charles Wilson Research Fund’s Grid Smarter Cities and is a co-investigator on the EPSRC-funded AI Hub for Real Data. Her research has influenced UK Government reports on the Metaverse and Web 3.0, and she advises on Knowledge Transfer Partnership projects.
Research interests include R&D management, university-industry collaboration, marketing analytics for new product development, and the impact of blockchain and big data on strategic alliances. Her recent studies address corporate green innovation, institutional dynamics, and organizational resilience.
She has advised over a dozen PhD students, including Sola Sonuga, Shengke Zeng, and Weihang [Katarina] Li. Her research has been featured in media outlets like The Sunday Times and BBC, highlighting its societal and technological impact.
