Karen Thompson is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of History of Art at the University of Glasgow, affiliated with the Kelvin Centre for Conservation and Cultural Heritage Research. She specializes in textile conservation and pedagogy, with a focus on object-based learning, self-regulated learning, and sustainable practices in conservation education. Her research integrates her 20+ years of professional experience as a textile conservator, addressing challenges in textile conservation methodologies and teaching innovation. She leads the MPhil Textile Conservation program and collaborates on projects such as embedding sustainability into curricula and evaluating conservation cleaning protocols.
Thompson’s research interests span painted textiles, tapestry conservation, and the application of scientific techniques for material analysis. Notable contributions include work on the Normansfield Theatre Scenery collection and collaborations on forensic textile degradation studies. She has been recognized as a Senior Fellow for Excellence in Teaching and holds fellowships from the International Institute of Conservation.
Her recent projects include investigating microscopic analysis of textile cleaning impacts and co-creating sustainable practices in conservation education. She actively engages in academic leadership, including external examining roles and steering committees for conservation education networks.
