Karen Swan is the James J. Stukel Distinguished Professor of Educational Leadership at the University of Illinois Springfield. Recognized as a leading researcher in online education, she focuses on social presence, learning communities, and effective online teaching practices. Her work spans over 150 publications and has earned her prestigious awards including the OLC Fellow designation and Columbia University's Distinguished Alumni Award.
Swan holds a BA in Philosophy from the University of Connecticut, and advanced degrees in Education from Keene State College and Columbia University. Her research explores how online learning impacts student retention and progression, with particular attention to MOOCs and blended learning models.
Her scholarship bridges theory and practice through frameworks like the Community of Inquiry, emphasizing collaborative and constructivist approaches. Recent work examines blended delivery modes' effects on student success and the role of learning analytics in educational evaluation.
