Elizabeth Kosmetatou is an associate professor of History at the University of Illinois Springfield (UIS), recognized as a leading scholar in Hellenistic history with a focus on the Attalid kingdom of Pergamon. Awarded UIS's highest faculty honor as 2015 University Scholar, her work bridges archaeology, numismatics, and textual analysis. She holds a doctorate in Classics from the University of Cincinnati and previously taught at Ohio State University.
Her research explores Pergamene dynastic politics, temple inventories (particularly the Delian Artemision), and epigraphic materials. Notable projects include analyzing votives, coinage, and the poet Poseidippus of Pella. Fluent in eight modern and ancient languages, she has conducted archaeological fieldwork in Greece and published widely on Hellenistic governance and cultural interactions.
Kosmetatou is an award-winning educator, combining online and on-campus teaching methods. Her 2012 Burks Oakley II Distinguished Online Teaching Award highlights her innovative pedagogy. She has organized international conferences, delivered guest lectures globally, and contributed to major publications like Cambridge University Press monographs.
As 2015 University Scholar, she received $45,000 over three years to advance research on Pergamene history. Her interdisciplinary approach examines how material culture, inscriptions, and literary texts reflect political legitimacy and socio-religious practices in antiquity.
