Professor Karen Spilsbury is a Professor of Nursing at the University of Leeds, part of the Faculty of Medicine and Health. She serves as Academic Director of NICHE-Leeds, a collaboration enhancing care home innovation. Previously, she held a Chair in Nursing at the University of York. Her expertise spans health and care workforce dynamics, care for older adults, and quality of care in long-term settings. She leads interdisciplinary research and policy engagement, with funding from NIHR and others.
Education includes a PhD in Nursing Leadership, PG Certificate in Academic Practice, and BA (Hons) in Nursing. She is a registered nurse and Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
Research focuses on workforce composition, staffing impacts on care quality, and care home innovation. Key projects include the international We-Thrive initiative and the Living Lab in Ageing. She has secured £19.6m across 30 studies, emphasizing care home workforce efficiency and resident outcomes.
Leadership roles include NIHR Senior Investigator (2023-2027), HEFCE REF2021 Sub-panel member, and NIHR Commissioning Committee roles. Awards include Fellowships and Honorary Professorships.
Teaching contributions span undergraduate and postgraduate programs, with supervision of doctoral students. She is active in mentoring future researchers and supports care home staff training initiatives.
NICHE-Leeds collaborates with care providers, universities, and local authorities to drive sustainable care home improvements. Her work addresses policy priorities like workforce optimization and reducing hospitalizations for frail elderly.
