Professor Helen Hurst is a joint clinical academic at the University of Salford and the Northern Care Alliance NHS Trust, specializing in renal medicine and care of the elderly. Her roles include Secretary of the Association of Nephrology Nurses UK, Co-chair of the UK Innovation and Dialysis Network, and Education and Workforce Lead for the Northwest Kidney Network. She has over 30 years of NHS experience with a focus on chronic kidney disease, peritoneal dialysis, and frailty in older patients. Her research emphasizes personalized care for elderly dialysis patients, symptom management, and optimizing multidisciplinary kidney care services.
Education highlights include a Florence Nightingale Scholarship and postdoctoral awards. She supervises doctoral students in kidney disease, frailty, and long-term conditions. Current funded projects include NIHR-supported studies on kidney carers and advanced kidney care interventions.
Research interests span qualitative and mixed-methods approaches to assess care priorities for frail elderly patients, including scoping reviews on interventions and outcomes. She has published extensively on peritoneal dialysis training, catheter complications, and rehabilitation strategies for lung transplant candidates.
