Karen Smith is the Department Chair and William Fulton Distinguished University Professor of Mathematics at the University of Michigan, affiliated with the College of Literature, Science and Arts. Her research focuses on commutative algebra and algebraic geometry, particularly prime characteristic methods, Frobenius map applications, and singularities in algebraic varieties. She earned a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in 1993. Prior roles include Assistant Professor and Moore Instructor at MIT. She is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Smith’s work explores connections between Frobenius splitting, F-singularities, and birational geometry. She has contributed to foundational theories on test ideals, multiplier ideals, and F-regularity. Active in academic leadership, she served as Associate Chair for Graduate Studies and chairs the Erdös Institute to support graduate students in non-academic careers. Her research is supported by grants like the NSF FRG and collaborations in positive/mixed characteristic algebraic geometry.
Her recent publications emphasize extremal singularities, F-pure thresholds, and Frobenius techniques. Awards include recognition for her contributions to algebraic geometry and commutative algebra. She collaborates internationally, including with institutions in Finland.
