Karen Rickel, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sport and Physical Education at Gonzaga University's School of Education. She also serves as the Chair of her department and Program Director for Sport Management.
- Education: Ph.D. and M.S. in Education from the University of Idaho, B.S. in Physical Education from Eastern Washington University, and A.A. from Spokane Falls Community College.
Her research focuses on exercise adherence and the integration of philosophy, technology, and life narratives into physical education. She explores motivations for intramural sports participation, technology usability in academic settings, and health curriculum development for school districts.
Recent publications analyze how online platforms and narrative-driven approaches influence exercise commitment and health outcomes. She teaches courses like Sport in the Social Context, Nutrition for Health and Fitness, and Diversity in Sport, alongside CPR and safety education.
Dr. Rickel received her Ph.D. in 2005 and has been active in Gonzaga's academic community since 1992, contributing to both graduate and undergraduate programs. Outside academia, she enjoys outdoor activities with her family, including running, golf, and kayaking.
