Dr. Karen Martin is a Discipline Coordinator and Professor of Language at Union University, specializing in Modern Languages. She holds a D.M.L. from Middlebury College and teaches courses in Spanish literature, cultural studies, and phonetics. Her research focuses on contemporary Spanish-American and Latina authors, with notable work on African Americans in the Spanish Civil War and US Latino literature. She has published in journals like South Atlantic Review and Letras Femeninas, and her book chapter appears in Black USA and Spain: Shared Memories in 20th Century Spain. Dr. Martin has received the Victoria Urbano Prize and two Pew Grants.
Education: B.A. in French (Union University), B.A. in Spanish (Samford University), M.A. in Spanish (University of Alabama), D.M.L. (Middlebury College).
Research interests include cultural memory, migration narratives, and postcolonial literature. She presents at conferences such as MIT and the Kentucky Foreign Language Conference. Teaching responsibilities include Spanish-American literature, contemporary Hispanic cultural studies, and phonetics instruction.
