Karen Marsalek is a Professor of English at St. Olaf College, affiliated with the English and Linguistic Studies departments. She specializes in early English literature, medieval and Renaissance drama, and Shakespearean stagecraft. Her current research focuses on bodily remains and revenants in plays by Shakespeare’s King’s Men. She teaches drama, early English literature, children’s literature, and oversees study abroad programs at Oxford’s Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies and Harris Manchester College.
Education: St. Olaf alum with graduate studies at the University of Oxford and the University of Toronto. She has directed medieval plays at the University of Toronto and researched at London’s Globe Theater.
Research Interests: Medieval/Renaissance theater performance, religious symbolism in drama, and historical contexts of early English plays. Her work bridges academic scholarship and live performance.
Publications: Co-edited a book on early English drama and authored articles on resurrections, Antichrist narratives, and Henry VIII’s divorce trial in dramatic contexts.
Labs/Teams: Engaged in collaborative research on early modern theater and directs performance projects integrating scholarly and theatrical practices.
