Karen Makuch is an Associate Professor in Environmental Law at Imperial College London's Centre for Environmental Policy (CEP) under the Faculty of Natural Sciences. She serves as the GECP Option Co-convener for the MSc Environmental Technology program, overseeing curriculum design, recruitment, and student development. She chairs the CEP Communications Committee and co-chairs the Mitigating Circumstances Committee, while also holding roles on College-wide panels including the Academic Misconduct and Student Appeals Panels.

Karen leads the Makuch Research Group, mentoring global PhD researchers in topics such as climate finance, environmental resilience, and water management. Her research spans environmental law, public interest environmental law, citizen science, and the environmental rights of children, with a focus on legal frameworks for sustainability and justice. She has supervised PhD theses funded by entities including the UKRI, Commonwealth Scholarship Commission, and Mexican National Council of Science and Technology.
Her recent publications (2020-2023) analyze procedural justice in greenhouse gas removal, citizen science applications, shale gas regulation, and behavioral strategies for energy sustainability. Key trends include interdisciplinary legal analysis, comparative policy studies, and justice-centered approaches to environmental governance.
Karen contributes to external academic evaluation as a peer reviewer, external PhD examiner, and LLM External Examiner. She previously served as a Trustee and Chair of a Community-run Organisation's Board of Trustees.
