Honorary Senior Lecturer Karen Luetsch is affiliated with the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences within the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Behavioural Sciences at the University of Queensland. With an extensive background spanning both clinical practice and academic research, Dr. Luetsch contributes significantly to pharmacy education and healthcare research.
Dr. Luetsch completed her undergraduate pharmacy training and PhD in Germany before moving to Australia in 1995. Her educational background combines strong theoretical foundations with practical clinical experience, having worked as a specialist pharmacist and manager in hospital pharmacy settings.
Dr. Luetsch's research program focuses on pharmacy and health professional education, pharmacists' attitudes and behaviors in practice, and realist research methodologies. She has made significant contributions to understanding patient-centered and interprofessional communication and practice. Her work often employs realist review and synthesis approaches to examine complex healthcare interventions, particularly in pharmacy services. Recent research has explored resilience in healthcare students and professionals, medication reviews after hospital discharge, and interprofessional collaboration in ward settings.
Her research demonstrates consistent trends toward understanding the contextual factors that influence successful implementation of pharmacy services and educational interventions. Rather than focusing on whether interventions work, her realist approach examines what works, for whom, why, and under what circumstances—a crucial perspective for translating research into practical healthcare settings.
- Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy
Dr. Luetsch actively supervises doctoral students, with recent completions including research on pharmacy residency programs and resilience in pharmacy students. Her collaborative approach is evident in her extensive co-authorship with colleagues across Australia and internationally. She has contributed to major research projects including evaluations of educational programs for optimizing medication use in autoimmune diseases.
Through her work with the Safe and Effective Medication Collaborative and other research groups, Dr. Luetsch engages with interdisciplinary teams to translate research findings into practical healthcare improvements, particularly in medication management and interprofessional practice.
