Karen Julie Kirk serves as Professor of Harp in the School of Music within the College of Arts and Architecture at Montana State University, teaching Applied Music and Performance Study courses including MUSI 195, MUSI 295, and MUSI 102.
Her educational background includes harp studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara with summer training at the Music Academy of the West, followed by graduate studies under Lucile Lawrence at Boston University and Tanglewood Institute.
Professor Kirk's research focuses on Harp Performance and Pedagogy, integrating orchestral performance techniques with harp-specific teaching methodologies. Her professional experience directly informs her pedagogical approach, emphasizing practical artistry and technical development for harpists.
As an active performer, she currently holds principal harp positions with the Monterey Symphony and Opera San Jose while performing with the Bozeman Symphony, Missoula Symphony, and Helena Symphony. She maintains a private teaching studio in Bozeman, Montana, complementing her university instruction.
