Karen Humphreys is a Senior Lecturer in the Continuing Professional Development Team for Nursing at the University of Sunderland. She currently serves as Programme Leader for the Certificate/Diploma in Quality Improvement and Patient Safety and the Clinical Leadership and Management short course. Prior to joining the CPD team in 2023, she spent over five years in the pre-registration nursing team. With 30 years of clinical practice experience across acute trusts in the North East, she held senior roles such as Lead Nurse for Cancer and Chemotherapy services, Clinical Operational Manager, and Matron for Medicine and Surgical Services.
Her expertise spans Advanced Communication Skills, Leadership in Healthcare, Oncology, and End of Life Care. She is a National Student Leadership in Healthcare coach and accredited Advanced Communications Skills facilitator. Karen holds a Master's in Academic and Professional Learning, emphasizing evidence-based practice to enhance patient outcomes. She actively contributes to educational initiatives, including module leadership for Managing Effective Health Care and serving as a Personal Tutor in BSc Nursing (Top-Up).
Karen advocates for ethical leadership to improve clinical care and patient experiences, reflecting her commitment to bridging academic and clinical practice. Her professional recognition includes Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy.
