Karen Hagemann is the James G. Kenan Distinguished Professor of History at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and an Adjunct Professor in the Curriculum in Peace, War and Defense. She holds offices in Hamilton Hall with Tuesday/Thursday office hours and can be reached at hagemann@unc.edu. Her academic journey includes a MA from the University of Hamburg (1980), Dr. Phil. (1989), and Habilitation from Technical University of Berlin (2000).
Her research focuses on Modern German/European history, military history, and women’s/gender history from the late 18th to 20th centuries. Key themes include military-gender dynamics, nationalism, masculinity, citizenship, and collective memory. Current projects include a monograph on Forgotten Soldiers: Women, the Military, and War in Europe since 1600 and a transnational research network (MKGD) on Military, War, and Gender/Diversity. She co-founded the digital humanities project GWonline, a comprehensive resource on gender and war.
Her publications include German Historians in North Migrant America (2024), Oxford Handbook of Gender, War, and the Western World (2020), and Revisiting Prussia’s Wars against Napoleon (2015, awarded the Hans Rosenberg Prize). The 2020 Handbook won the Society for Military History’s Distinguished Book Award.
She co-advises Maddie James and teaches courses on German history, gender theory, and memory studies. She co-edits the Palgrave Macmillan series War, Culture and Society, 1750-1850, celebrating its 50th volume in 2024. Her research bridges transatlantic scholarship, Cold War history, and interdisciplinary collaboration through networks like MKGD.
