Prof. Karen Eltis is a Full Professor of Law at the University of Ottawa’s Faculty of Law (Civil Law Section) and a Faculty member at the Centre for Law, Technology and Society. Fluent in five languages and proficient in two more, she holds law degrees from McGill University, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and Columbia Law School (Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar).
Her research focuses on AI/innovation law, cybersecurity, and privacy from a comparative perspective. Notable contributions include Supreme Court of Canada citations in landmark privacy cases (A.B. v. Bragg (2012), Quebec (AG) v. 9147-0732 Québec inc. (2020), Sherman Estate v. Donovan (2021)).
Publications include *Courts, Litigants and the Digital Age* (Irwin Law, 2016), supported by CIRA grants, and research on AI and expression funded by the Foundation for Legal Research. Former director of the Human Rights Centre and Senior Advisor to the National Judicial Institute, she also taught at Columbia Law School and was a litigation associate in NYC.
