Karen Cook serves as Associate Professor and Chair of Music History at The Hartt School, University of Hartford, while also directing graduate studies and teaching courses like Introduction to Video Game Music and medieval music surveys. Her research bridges late medieval music theory with contemporary media, particularly video games, where she explores how historical sonic practices inform modern interactive audio.

- Bachelor of Arts in Music Performance and Religion from Gettysburg College
Cook’s academic contributions include editing Gender, Sexuality, and Video Game Sound (Routledge, 2025–26) and co-editing Global Histories of Video Game Music Technology (Brepols, 2025). She analyzes how 8-bit limitations shaped compositional strategies in games like Faxanadu and investigates medievalism in Civilization VI, focusing on notation, borrowing, and environmental audio.
As Associate Editor for the Journal of Sound and Music in Games and committee member of the Society for the Study of Sound and Music in Games, Cook connects historical musicology with emerging digital practices. She also collaborates on Ars Antiqua Online, a digital polyphony edition project.
