James Cook is a Senior Lecturer in Early Music at the Reid School of Music, part of the Edinburgh College of Art at the University of Edinburgh. He also serves as the ECA Director of Research and co-writes the research podcast Artful Inquiry.

Research Interests: James specializes in early music from the 14th to 16th centuries, with a focus on cultural exchange, manuscript studies, and notation. He also explores the representation of early music in popular media, including film, television, and video games. His work bridges traditional musicology with digital humanities, evidenced by his AHRC-funded Space, Place, Sound, and Memory project’s VR experience at Linlithgow Palace.

Teaching and Supervision: James teaches historical musicology, harmony, counterpoint, and notation. He supervises PhD students in early music, archival research, and edition-based projects. His external collaborations include serving as Scholar in Residence for The Binchois Consort and as area editor for the British Academy’s Early English Church Music committee.
