Karen Cheng is a Professor of Visual Communication Design at the University of Washington School of Art, Art History and Design, where she has taught since 1997. She holds a Master’s Degree in Design from the University of Cincinnati's College of Design, Art, Architecture and Planning. Her work bridges scholarly research and creative practice, focusing on typography, information design, and functional communication design.
Cheng is renowned for her seminal book Designing Type (Yale University Press, 2006), translated into multiple languages, which serves as a foundational text for typeface design. The book analyzes classic and modern typefaces, emphasizing letterform construction, optical compensation, and legibility. Her design work has garnered significant recognition, including a 2011 nomination for the US National Design Award.
Her research spans authored publications and creative projects, including data visualization and functional graphics. She has contributed to international design discourse through her writings and lectures.
