Research Interests
Professor Bickerstaff investigates place-based dimensions of living with techno-environmental risks including climate change, air pollution, and nuclear infrastructures, examining intersections between technology, emotion, and agency. Her work critically explores geographies and temporalities of environmental injustice, particularly through carbon flow analysis as an entry point to climate justice ethics. She challenges conventional notions of 'toxic communities' by analyzing historical place contexts, harm experiences, and power dynamics within socio-technical transitions.
Scientific Awards
- Leverhulme Research Fellowship (2023)
Professional Leadership
Karen serves as Editor of Geo: Geography and Environment and leads the Responsive Insights Group while chairing the Net Zero Task Force within the Exeter-led ACCESS network (Advancing Capacity for Climate and Environment Social Science). Her current research funded by the Leverhulme Fellowship investigates carbon geographies to address ethical and political challenges in global climate mitigation, emphasizing collaborative methodologies for equitable sustainability transitions.
