Karen Benjamin is an Associate Professor and Director of First-Year Seminars in the Department of History at Elmhurst University, holding the Lester Brune and Joan Brune Endowed Chair of History.
She earned her Ph.D. in History from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 2007.
Dr. Benjamin specializes in U.S. History with focused expertise in Urban History, Residential Segregation, School Segregation, and Environmental History, particularly examining segregation tactics in New South cities from the late nineteenth century. Her forthcoming book Good Parents, Better Homes, and Great Schools: Selling Segregation before the New Deal (University of North Carolina Press, July 2025) analyzes how white developers and government allies implemented neighborhood-level segregation predating HOLC maps, linking these practices to middle-class parenting ideals.
Her scientific awards include:

- National Academy of Education/Spencer Postdoctoral Fellowship (2010)
Dr. Benjamin's research on schooling and suburbanization connections, supported by Spencer Foundation grants, was published in the Journal of Urban History (2012). She teaches diverse courses including Colonial America, U.S. Women’s History, and The Formation of the Chicago Ghetto.
