Dr. Kara Smith is a Partner Researcher with Lews Castle College, University of Highlands and Islands (UHI) and affiliated with the Faculty of Education at the University of Windsor. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Stirling, along with degrees from the University of Western Ontario, University of Windsor, and University of Waterloo. Her academic roles include editorial leadership for journals such as The Journal of Teaching and Learning and The Canadian Journal of Education/Revue canadienne de l'éducation.
Dr. Smith’s research focuses on multidisciplinary English curriculum design, multilingualism, and comparative education. She pioneered the first Open-Access VLS Global Education Doctorate in Remote Pedagogy and Stewardship (2022–) and conducted an Impact Study of Microsoft STEM school programs (2019–2022). Her work emphasizes integrating technology into education, global collaboration, and inclusive teaching practices.
Her awards include the Distinguished Contributions to University Teaching Award (2013) and recognition for her poetry collection The Artists of Crow County, which was shortlisted for the Walrus Poetry Prize. She has served as Writer-in-Residence for the Municipality of Chatham-Kent and La Roche D'Hys Arts Centre, France.
