Kara Fletcher serves as Associate Professor at the University of Regina's Faculty of Social Work (Saskatoon Campus) and Director of the Social Work Research Centre. A Registered Social Worker (RSW) and AAMFT-accredited couple and family therapist, she holds BA, MSW, and PhD credentials with specialized post-graduate training in family therapy.
Her research program centers on couple and family therapy applications for substance use and mental health, with growing expertise in Medical Assistance in Dying contexts. Current projects examine hustle culture's impact on relationships and develop community-based interventions like Saskatchewan's first virtual substance use support network. Methodologically, she combines clinical case studies with community participatory approaches, emphasizing trauma-informed and relational frameworks.
Dr. Fletcher's recent publication trends reveal deep integration of clinical practice and academic research, particularly in adapting Emotionally Focused Therapy for addiction recovery and exploring childhood trauma-substance use links. Her work increasingly utilizes digital platforms for knowledge translation, including podcast projects and public commentary.
As Principal Investigator for RBC, SSHRC, and Saskatchewan Health Research Foundation grants, she leads projects addressing critical gaps in substance use support systems and trauma care. Her supervision philosophy emphasizes real-world impact through community partnerships, with current projects involving residential programs for trauma-impacted children and youth crystal meth recovery initiatives.
The Social Work Research Centre under her direction functions as Saskatchewan's hub for innovative social work scholarship, focusing on practical solutions for mental health and substance use challenges through the dual lenses of clinical therapy and community engagement.
