Dr. Kara E. Dempsey is an Associate Professor in the Department of Geography and Planning at Appalachian State University, within the College of Arts and Sciences. Her research focuses on nationalism, sectarian conflicts, international forced migration, and conflict reconciliation in Ireland. She has held leadership roles as President Emeritus of the Political Geography Specialty Group and the European Specialty Group of the American Association of Geographers (AAG).
Dr. Dempsey’s research interests include the geopolitics of migration, peacebuilding processes in Ireland, and Brexit’s impact on Ireland/UK relations. Her work often examines the spatial dimensions of political violence, asylum policies, and the role of religion in shaping geographies of conflict and reconciliation.
Her scholarly contributions include co-editing Making Geographies of Peace and Conflict (2023) and authoring An Introduction to the Geopolitics of Ireland (2022). She has been recognized with awards such as the 2022 Donnelly Prize (Honorable Mention) and the Virginie Mamadouh Outstanding Research Award (2021).
Dr. Dempsey is also a dedicated educator, inducted into Appalachian State’s Academy of Outstanding Teachers (2021) and recipient of multiple teaching excellence awards.
