Kanwal Aftab is a Lecturer in the Urban Design program at the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design, University of Toronto. She concurrently serves as an urban designer with the city of Brampton, focusing on equitable public infrastructure in new urban growth centers. Her academic research explores the pedagogical influence of systems thinking and systems art on 20th-century environmental design professions. A dual-degree holder in architecture and landscape architecture, she has professional experience across Canada, the US, and Pakistan.
She is affiliated with TUFLab, an urban form research laboratory at the University of Toronto, and serves on the editorial board of Ground Magazine (OALA's quarterly publication). Her work bridges theoretical frameworks from systems art and design education with practical urban development challenges, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to sustainability and equity.
