Kaia Stern is a Lecturer on Education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE). She serves as Director of Justice Initiatives at the Public Works Alliance and was the first Practitioner in Residence at the Harvard Radcliffe Institute, leading its Law, Education, and Justice strategic focus area. Her work bridges academia and activism through the Prison Studies Project, co-founded in 2008. Stern holds a Ph.D. from Emory University (2008) and a master’s from Harvard Divinity School.
Her research focuses on transformative education within carceral systems, liberation theology, and ethical justice frameworks. Notable projects include authoring *Voices from American Prisons: Faith, Education, and Healing* (2014) and contributing to *The Bloomsbury Handbook of Prison Education* (2024). She has taught widely on race, justice, and ethics, with over 30 years of experience in U.S. correctional education systems.
Professional affiliations include roles at the Harvard Kennedy School and national/international educational consulting. Stern’s work emphasizes reimagining justice through education and has been featured in platforms like the Harvard Gazette and *Inquest* journal.
