Harold Dean Trulear is Professor of Applied Theology in the Ministry Studies department at the School of Divinity, Howard University, where he has taught since 2003. He holds a Ph.D. from Drew University and a B.A. from Morehouse College, and has held faculty positions at Yale University, Eastern University, Colgate Rochester Divinity School, and others.

Dr. Trulear's research focuses on the intersection of faith, justice, and community development. He is particularly known for his work on prison reentry, social justice advocacy, and the role of congregations in supporting families affected by incarceration. His teaching includes Ethics and Politics, Ministry and Criminal Justice, and Church and Community Studies.
His recent publications reflect a strong focus on restorative justice, faith-based rehabilitation, and community healing. Themes across his work include the moral imperative of reentry support, the role of religious institutions in social reform, and the critique of mass incarceration. His scholarship combines theological reflection with practical ministry applications.

Dr. Trulear has advised national initiatives and served on the Executive Session on Community Corrections at Harvard’s Kennedy School (2013–2016). He directed the national 'Healing Communities' research and demonstration project and co-edited the influential book Ministry with Prisoners and Families: The Way Forward. He has lectured widely at universities and religious organizations and continues to serve as a pastoral associate at Empowered Ministries International.
He leads the 'Healing Communities' initiative, a national effort that mobilizes congregations to support formerly incarcerated individuals through family and social networks. This project exemplifies his commitment to bridging academic theology with grassroots activism and policy reform.
