Joshua Dubler is an Associate Professor of Religion at the University of Rochester and Director of the Rochester Education Justice Initiative. He holds a PhD from Princeton University (2008). His research focuses on religion in American carceral systems, with a particular emphasis on religious practices among incarcerated populations and the intersection of faith with criminal justice reform. Dubler’s work includes ethnographic studies of prison chapels, the role of religious communities in advocating for decarceration, and theological critiques of mass incarceration.
His notable publications include *Down in the Chapel: Religious Life in an American Prison* (2013), which explores religious rituals and identities in a Pennsylvania state prison, and *Break Every Yoke: Religion, Justice, and the Abolition of Prisons* (2019), co-authored with Elizabeth H. Death, examining abolitionist frameworks through religious ethics. He is also a co-editor of *Religion, Law, USA* (2019), analyzing legal dimensions of religious practice in American institutions.
Dubler’s affiliations include leadership in the Rochester Decarceration Research Initiative and active participation in public dialogues on criminal justice reform. His research has been featured in media outlets such as C-SPAN, WNYC, and *The Los Angeles Review of Books*.
