Kai Schmidt-Hoberg is a Researcher in the Theory Group at Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY) in Hamburg, Germany. Since October 2014, he has led an independent research group focusing on physics beyond the Standard Model and dark matter phenomenology, funded by an ERC Starting Grant from the European Union's Horizon 2020 programme (grant agreement no. 638528).
His academic background includes:
- Staff member at DESY Theory Group (2014-present)
- Fellow in the CERN theory division
- Research positions at the Particle Theory Group, University of Oxford
- Research positions at the Particle Theory Group, TU Munich
Dr. Schmidt-Hoberg's research centers on the interplay between particle physics and astrophysics, with particular emphasis on theoretical models of dark matter and experimental search strategies. His work bridges theoretical predictions with observational possibilities in one of particle physics' most significant open questions.
He has supervised three graduate students and multiple postdoctoral researchers including Yohei Ema, Fady Bishara, and Camilo Garcia-Cely. Former group members include Michael Duerr (now at Oxford), James Unwin (Humboldt fellow at Chicago), and Sebastian Wild (now at Philips).
Among his notable achievements is the competitive ERC Starting Grant that enabled him to establish his dedicated dark matter research program. In 2015, he taught a specialized course titled 'Phenomenology of Physics beyond the Standard Model' at DESY.
