Max Planck Institute for Biology Tübingenمعرفی
Dr. Kai Buckenmaier is a Project Leader at the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics in Tübingen, Germany, leading the High-field Magnetic Resonance Department. His research focuses on advancing ultralow-field MRI technologies, hyperpolarization techniques, and SQUID-based sensor applications. He holds a PhD in Physics from the University of Tübingen and has held roles at the University of Tübingen and the University of Berkeley (USA) before his current position.
Education:
- 2001-2006: Diploma in Physics at University of Tübingen (Diploma thesis: 'Spectroscopy of fractional Josephson vortices')
- 2006-2010: PhD at University of Tübingen ('Activation energy of fractional vortices and spectroscopy of vortex molecules in long Josephson Junctions')
Research Interests: Kai’s work bridges physics and biomedical engineering, with emphasis on developing hyperpolarization methods (e.g., ODNP, parahydrogen) for ultralow-field MRI. He explores SQUID sensors to enhance signal detection at kHz frequencies and investigates safety-critical RF coil designs for high-field MRI systems (e.g., 9.4 T). His long-term goal is to integrate functional MRI at ultralow fields with MEG for combined high-resolution neuroimaging.
Current Projects:
- Development of low-noise NMR/MRI setups using SQUID sensors
- Optimization of hyperpolarized contrast agents for in vivo applications
- Safety simulations for RF coils in high-field MRI environments
Advising & Grants: Kai mentors researchers in the High-field Magnetic Resonance group and coordinates interdisciplinary projects at the institute. His work is supported by core facilities including the Imaging and Scientific Support unit.
Labs/Teams: Leads the High-field Magnetic Resonance research group at the Max Planck Institute, collaborating with the Fine Mechanical Workshop and Electronic Workshop for hardware development.
