Her research expertise focuses on politics and religion, with particular emphasis on Sunni politics and political opposition in Iraq and Egypt. Dr. Santing has published extensively on the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood under Sadat and Mubarak, analyzing Arabic journals and newspapers to provide new insights into the movement's mentality history. Her current research project (2023-2024), funded by an NWO Open Competitie SGW XS grant, examines the reconstruction of Mosul from both Iraqi and Dutch perspectives, investigating how complex contexts of international actors and local sectarian politics affect reconstruction efficiency and sustainability. In August 2020, she published the book "Imagining the Perfect Society in Muslim Brotherhood Journals" with De Gruyter.
Dr. Santing's publication portfolio demonstrates a strong focus on post-conflict reconstruction in Iraq, particularly Mosul after the ISIS occupation, as well as historical and contemporary analyses of political Islam in Egypt. Her work spans academic journals, books, conference papers, and professional contributions, showing both scholarly rigor and engagement with practical policy issues. The publications reveal a consistent thematic thread connecting historical analysis of political Islam with contemporary challenges in post-conflict reconstruction and sectarian politics.
She has received recognition for her teaching excellence and holds multiple external positions including:
