K.D. Kuntz is a Principal Research Scientist at the Henry A. Rowland Department of Physics and Astronomy, Johns Hopkins University (JHU), and collaborates with NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center's Astrophysics Science Division. He leads the XMM Guest Observer Facility's Extended Source Analysis Software (ESAS), focusing on instrumental background characterization for X-ray missions. His expertise spans solar wind charge exchange (SWCX) emission studies, magnetosheath dynamics, and Galactic halo research. He is involved in missions like SMILE (2025 launch), LEXI (operational since 2025), and STORM (reproposed).
- Education: Ph.D., Astronomy, University of Maryland (2000); M.S., University of Hawaii (1988); B.S., MIT (1985).
- Research Interests: SWCX emission modeling, Galactic ISM structure, wide-field X-ray imaging, and heliospheric X-ray emission.
Current projects include ESAS development, SMPO (slumped micropore optics) simulators, and magnetosheath X-ray simulations. Past missions include DXL, HaloSat, and CuPID. No scientific awards explicitly listed.
