Jessica Marie Johnson

Jessica Marie Johnson is an Associate Professor of History at Johns Hopkins University and former fellow at Harvard's Hutchins Center. Her research examines gender, slavery, and digital humanities in the African diaspora, recognized by nine major awards including the Wesley-Logan Prize and Lora Romero Prize.

She directs LifexCode: Digital Humanities Against Enclosure and co-leads the Mellon-funded Diaspora Solidarities Lab. Her award-winning book Wicked Flesh explores Black women's struggles for freedom in the Atlantic world. Current book projects with Liveright/Norton examine digital engagements with slavery's history and Black researchers in emancipation.

Her scholarship bridges Black feminism, computational analysis, and archival reinterpretation while advocating for decolonial digital practices through initiatives like Black Beyond Data.
