Jürgen Brem is a Postdoctoral Researcher and holds a Junior Research Fellowship at St Cross College, University of Oxford. He is also an Oxford Innovation (OUI) Fellow (2017) and Champion (2018), as well as a GSK OpenLab Fellow (2017). His primary affiliation is with the University of Oxford, where he works in the Schofield group and leads the ENABLE-IMI program.
He completed his undergraduate Diploma in Biochemical Engineering (2007) and Master of Science in Cellular Biotransformation (2009) from Babes-Bolyai University, Cluj-Napoca, Romania. His PhD in Biocatalysis (2009) was conducted at the same institution, with a research stint at the University of Turku’s Faculty of Medicine in Finland (2010) supported by a CIMO scholarship. Since 2012, he has been part of the Schofield group at Oxford.
Brem’s research focuses on antibiotic resistance mechanisms, particularly bacterial metallo-β-lactamases, and developing novel antibiotics and anticancer enzyme inhibitors. He emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches combining microbiology, enzymology, and medicinal chemistry.
