Johannes Abeler is a Professor of Economics at the University of Oxford and Supernumerary Fellow of St Anne's College. He holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Bonn and previously worked at the University of Nottingham before joining Oxford in 2011. His research focuses on behavioral and public economics, examining topics like honesty, fairness, fungibility, and complexity in decision-making. He teaches courses in behavioral economics and has led significant policy-related research during the COVID-19 pandemic, including studies on contact tracing and NHS Test and Trace program impacts.
Education: Electrical Engineering and Industrial Engineering studies, followed by a PhD in Economics at the University of Bonn.
Research interests include experimental methods to study social preferences, economic decision-making under uncertainty, and the design of effective public policies. His work bridges theoretical economics with real-world applications, particularly in understanding how individual preferences shape economic outcomes.
His recent articles analyze behavioral responses to public health measures, incentive structures in taxation, and the malleability of moral preferences. He has received notable recognition including the 2019 Schmolders Prize for Behavioral Economics Research and an ESRC Research Grant.
Prof. Abeler currently serves as Head of the Department of Economics at Oxford and leads research groups focusing on impact and engagement in policy-oriented economics. His work emphasizes translating academic findings into actionable insights for policymakers.
