Jörg Ulrich is a Professor of Church History at Martin-Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg’s Faculty of Theology, Institute of Historical Theology, and Seminar for Church History. He will retire on September 30, 2025, after 23 years of service. His roles include Dean of the Faculty of Theology (2008–2010), University Preacher (2003–2022), and Visiting Professor at Aarhus University (2004, 2005–2020).
- Education: Theology at Hamburg, Bethel, Tübingen, and Durham (UK) (1981–1987)
His research spans early Christian history, focusing on 2nd-century apologists, Christianity and Judaism in antiquity, late Antiquity theology, 12th-century church reforms, and theological (auto)biographical texts. Additional interests include religion in modern literature and higher education didactics.
Prof. Ulrich has supervised nine doctoral students, including Claudia Konoppa (2003), Tobias Georges (2004), and Johann Anton Zieme (2024). He has contributed to DFG-funded theology projects (2008–2016) and held leadership roles at multiple institutions.
Prof. Ulrich’s affiliations include the European Romanesque Center, the Ephorus role at the Evangelical Seminary Halle (2011–2022), and current positions as a board member of Augustana Neuendettelsau (since 2019) and Dean of the United Cathedral Foundations (since 2024).
