Professor Jörg Baberowski is a distinguished historian specializing in Eastern European history at Humboldt University of Berlin, where he has held a professorship since October 2002. He has served in multiple leadership roles including Director of the Institute for Historical Sciences (2004-2006, 2008-2009), Dean of the Faculty of Humanities I (2009-2010), and currently serves as spokesperson for the interdisciplinary research network 'Landscapes of Persecution' (2019-2023) funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
Baberowski earned his Magister in History and Philosophy from the University of Göttingen in 1988, completed his doctorate at the University of Frankfurt in 1994 with research on late Tsarist Russia, and received his habilitation from the University of Tübingen in 2001 focusing on Stalinism in Azerbaijan. His academic journey includes positions at the University of Frankfurt, University of Tübingen, and a temporary professorship at the University of Leipzig before joining Humboldt University.
His research centers on Russian and Soviet history with particular expertise in Stalinism, totalitarian regimes, 20th century European history, Imperial Russia, and the cultural foundations of political violence. Baberowski examines how power structures operate, how violence becomes normalized within political systems, and the historical roots of contemporary geopolitical conflicts. His scholarly approach combines institutional history with cultural analysis to explore representations of social orders and political power.
His recent publications reveal an evolution from focused studies on Stalinism toward broader examinations of political philosophy, democracy crises, and the historical dimensions of contemporary conflicts, particularly regarding Russia's relationship with Ukraine and the West. While maintaining his expertise in Soviet history, his newer works explore the philosophical dimensions of power, order, and freedom across historical periods.
