Justine Ballon serves as Assistant Professor at HEC Montréal, Quebec, Canada. She holds a Doctor of Economics from the University of Paris Cité (Diderot) and a Master's in Human Resources Management and Corporate Social Responsibility under thesis director Thomas Lamarche.
Her research focuses on:
- Social and solidarity economy (ESS)
- Cooperatives and circular economy
- Social & ecological transition
- Socio-productive models in gray areas of work
- Multifunctional cooperative governance
Adopting an institutionalist analytical framework, Dr. Ballon examines how social economy actors develop alternative production, organization, and consumption models challenging dominant institutions. Her work specifically analyzes Activity and Employment Cooperatives (CAEs) as experimental socio-productive systems operating at the intersection of market/non-market production and salaried/independent work relationships.
Geographically spanning France and Quebec, her research reveals how CAEs maintain sustainability through cooperative projects emphasizing work-based autonomy despite insufficient market resources. She identifies structural instability as both a key factor in CAE longevity and a source of organizational tensions.
As a partner at Manucoop, she contributes to 'The Cooperative Voice' podcast exploring cooperation across organizational contexts. Her teaching includes Bachelor's courses on society and sustainable development, and Master's instruction on designing and managing social innovation.
