Dr. Justin Winzenburg is a Professor of New Testament and Director of the Crown Honors Program at Crown College's School of Theology + Ministry. He holds a Ph.D. in New Testament from Middlesex University (London School of Theology), an M.A. in Theological Studies from Bethel Seminary, and a B.A. in Bible and Theology from Crown College. His research focuses on the New Testament's Roman imperial context, particularly exploring anti-imperial themes in Ephesians and employing methodologies like empire criticism and speech-act theory. He co-authored Across the Pond: Navigating a PhD in Biblical Studies from a Distance (2022) and authored Ephesians and Empire (2022), which evaluates the epistle's subversion of Roman imperial ideology.
Dr. Winzenburg’s work bridges academic rigor and pastoral impact, emphasizing how historical and theological studies can strengthen Christian faith. He is an affiliated member of the Society of Biblical Literature, Institute for Biblical Research, British New Testament Society, and Upper Midwest Honors Council. His presentations include discussing Ephesians as an 'anti-imperial hidden transcript' at the 2010 SBL/AAR conference. In 2021–2022, he received Crown College's Distinguished Scholarship Award for his contributions to biblical studies.
His publications explore topics such as Markan demonology's liberationist dimensions, Pauline ethics in Ephesians, and postcolonial interpretations of Mark. He advocates for contextualized exegesis that addresses power dynamics in ancient and modern societies. As Honors Director, he integrates interdisciplinary approaches to enhance student scholarship.
