Justin Stine is an Assistant Research Scientist and Director of Remote Sensing and Microsystems at the University of Maryland's A. James Clark School of Engineering, affiliated with the MATRIX Lab. He holds a Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering (2023) from the University of Maryland, College Park, and earlier degrees from St. Mary's College of Maryland (B.A. Physics/Mathematics, 2014) and the University of Maryland (M.S. Electrical and Computer Engineering, 2019). His research focuses on designing autonomous microsystems for sensing applications, including ingestible devices for gastrointestinal monitoring, bioprocess control in industrial bioreactors, and environmental sensing. Key areas include MEMS, electrochemical sensors, and closed-loop systems.

Dr. Stine’s research emphasizes autonomous microsystems for healthcare and industrial applications. His work on ingestible bioimpedance sensors, serotonin detection platforms, and thermomechanical drug delivery systems has advanced minimally invasive diagnostics. Recent projects include real-time H₂S detection in the GI tract and biofilm treatment for urinary catheters. His contributions have been featured in journals like Microsystems & Nanoengineering and Advanced Healthcare Materials, with grants from NSF and industry partnerships.
His lab develops integrated capsule systems for targeted sampling and sensing in harsh environments, such as bioreactors and the gastrointestinal tract. Innovations include the 'smart marble' platform for bioprocess monitoring and region-responsive packaging for ingestible devices. Collaborations with clinicians and engineers address challenges in drug delivery, biofilm control, and environmental sensing.
