Justin R. Long is an Associate Professor of Law at Wayne State University Law School, specializing in state constitutionalism, public education law, urban law, and federalism. He serves as Associate Director for Education Law and Policy at the Damon J. Keith Center for Civil Rights, collaborating with civil rights activists. Previously, he worked as a visiting assistant professor at the University of Connecticut School of Law, practiced as an Assistant Solicitor General in New York, and clerked for federal and state appellate judges.
He holds a J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School and an A.B. from Harvard University. His research focuses on enhancing access to civil justice through state constitutional frameworks, judicial reform, and the intersection of education law with urban governance. Recent work critiques state constitutional interpretation dynamics and explores workplace rights under state constitutions.
Long’s scholarship spans over a decade, addressing issues like gun rights, LGBTQ+ protections, and school governance. He advises on judicial selection processes, including serving on Michigan’s Judicial Selection Task Force. His writings emphasize interactive federalism and the evolving role of state constitutions in safeguarding fundamental values.
Teaching includes courses on State Constitutionalism, Civil Procedure, and Detroit’s legal landscape. His advocacy extends beyond academia through community engagement and policy advising.
